  • I have heard so many good things about Essie and all their nail polishes but as of yet I haven't really wanted to pay out the money for these little bottles.  I love painting my nails but hate it when they only last a few days. While I love beautiful nails, I am far from careful with them, and so I know that if I do go to the trouble of painting them, I need to always use a base and top coat.

Both of my basic store brand bottles were almost finished so I decided to spend an hour or so walking around Boots having a look at my different options.  While strolling along I came across the Essie stand and as I still had some vouchers from Christmas I decided to treat myself. I came home with Good to go, all in one base and Chinchilly.

I was so pleased with the quality of these items. I started with the All in One coat which nourishes and enriches my nails and once dried I moved on the colour. While the chinchilly colour was thick and full of colour, I decided that two coats of color were best. After about 15 minutes I then put the Good to go top coat and loved how this not only provided great cover but is also a quick dry and chip proof coat.

And what was my first experience of using them like?  Well here I sit, 5 days later, and I don't have one chip.  I love these products and despite the price tag on them, I think I am hooked for life!

What is your favorite Essie colour?

Just four days into this months journey and today has been completely off track from what I had planned. Today sort of got away from me, so I wanted to take some time and reflect on what had happened, what had triggered the changes; and I came up with two main things.  The first was a trial and error problem and not enough preparation. What I mean by that is I made a decision to try some new recipes for my lunches at work and while I did make them, I didn't enjoy them. I ate one of the four meals and couldn't face the second one today.  This shouldn't have been enough to derail me, however here I sit and I have no idea what I am going to eat tomorrow. I have no salad in my fridge which makes any sort of  work lunch difficult. I now realise that while its good to try new recipes, I needed to have had a back up plan. A "just in case" dish to prevent carnage.  The second lesson that I realised is that despite very good attempts by myself, I still need much more practise at not letting other peoples comments affect me to the point of self sabotage.  I posted a new picture of myself on Instagram over the weekend, and the other night I got a text message from my ex ( who I haven't seen in months) and he tells me that he thinks I look really old and my skin doesn't look great in that photo. I tried not to let it bother me, I tried for his comments not to affect my mood or my thoughts but I wasn't as successful as I had hoped to be.  So lesson number two is that I need a plan for situations like that. I need to find a way to really not care, to not let it throw me or my value.
Right now I cant change how I decided to behave today, I cant change the fact that I pigged out and ate chocolates to the point of feeling sick and having tummy ache, of missing dinner so that I could instead just eat rubbish. But what I can do, is take those lessons learnt, figure out a back up plan and face tomorrow with a fresh start and positive thoughts and attitudes.
There are going to be bumps along the journey, and I realise that this is just one of many. I want to document the journey, so that I can see how far I have come and I am hoping that at some point, my journey will help someone else with theirs.

As far as my weight journey goes this month, August has been a very weird month for me.  Overall this month, I have gained 0.4lbs which on its own is disappointing, however if I consider the fact that I went on holiday for a week and enjoyed every moment and every morsel of food during it, and that I had one week of major stress and returned to old habits the slight gain isn't that bad.

I am slowly learning that this journey is not all about the number on the scale but is about growth, confidence and all those non-scale victories that make up every day of the month.  Here are my non-scale victories for August:
✤ Despite the stressful period, I got back onto the healthy eating plan
✤ I haven't given up with this journey - despite the slight gain this month
✤ I went to weigh in every week when I could have given it a miss
✤ I tried several new recipes
    ✤ I am making progress
✤ At group this week just passed, I won slimmer of the week. Woohoo!!

My goal for September is to lose 10lbs and while my birthday is coming round this month - I am determined to not let it get away from me.

July 2012 - End of month one

Operation Bye Bye is in full swing and has been for four weeks now.  My focus has been one day at a time, one meal at a time. I have been planning my food weekly and sticking to it as much as possible.  My plan has been to eat real, clean, unprocessed foods 90% of the day, and anything else for the remaining 10%.  It has been a learning curve for me, one that I am getting better at with each day that passes.

My mom asked me if this change in what I am eating is making me feel better, and I took a little while to answer. It's weird, because yes I do feel better, but at the same time I cant seem to put my finger on what exactly feels better. I know that sounds weird but I'm not sure how else to explain it.

July has been a challenging month on both the weight loss and exercise front, but I am pleased with the progress that I have been able to make - 8.6lbs lost this month.  My goal for July was 10lbs but 8.6lbs is still pretty good. August's goal is going to be 8lbs as I will be on holiday for one week that month.

On my journey to lose 130lbs, I thought I might try something a little different. I have my big goal but I want something a little smaller, a little easier to attain and a little quicker to come to an end.  My idea?  Consistently changing monthly challenges.

I have some ideas for a few months but I definitely need more as time goes on. If you have any ideas feel free to leave a comment below.

Over the past few months, the one thing that repeatedly seems to trip me up at one point or another is the scale.  Or more specifically the numbers on the scale.  Sometimes, I find that those numbers end up dictating my day. How I feel about myself and the way my day is going to turn out. At times, those numbers looking back at me are enough to make me throw aside my healthy intentions and jump head first into my old habits.

It's shameful to admit that I let those numbers have such an impact on my life.  That my self worth, happiness and values are tied up to them.  Especially when I know that I am a daughter of the King.  My head holds a lot of knowledge about the value that I should hold about myself - things like He knew me before I was born, He formed me in my mothers womb, He knows the number of hairs on my head and He Love me regardless of my weight.  Those are some of the things that my head knows......but that my heart seems to battling to accept.

In view of the impact that the scale has on me - my first monthly challenge will be to ditch the scale for 30 days.  My focus will be off the numbers and on to the healthy habits.

Here are my plans for this month:

    1. NO standing on the scale...no matter how much I think I want to.  Those numbers are not going to impact my day to day life this month.  They are not going to predict my value or my mood.

    2. I will not eat any chocolate. This is going to be a tough one, but it must be done. No excuses.

    3. I will eat healthy, whole and unprocessed foods. My body deserves the very best. It can only work with what I put into it and therefore I need to give it all that I can. Nuts, fruit and veg, protein...all things that my body needs and wants.

    4. I will be mindful of my thoughts. Thoughts are just there. Every minute of every day.  If we allow those negative and bad thoughts to continue making their way around our thinking, that is when we begin to believe them and eventually we start to behave in ways that confirm those thoughts.  I no longer want to live like that.

So this is my challenge for this month.  Would you like to join me?  Please do.

I still haven't yet finished all of my March pages for my Scrapbook*Life*Journal.  I definitely want to document our Iceland trip that we took, but at the moment my printer is all out of ink so once the new cartridges arrive, then I can make a start on those pages.

But, even though I have not completely finished with March, I thought I would share what I have already completed.

I am so loving this project. It gives me time to reflect, to create and to learn more about God and my life.

I wasn't expecting there to be such a big lag between my last post and this one....sorry about that.  I know this is going to sound weird, but this post feels like a big deal to me. Like a new start, and I think that it really is the beginning of something good.

I made a few decisions a couple weeks ago. I cancelled my subscription to Weight Watchers on line and I found myself another option.  It was not an easy task and definitely not an easy decision. You see, I have been doing WW on and off for the past eight years or so and I find myself here, with still so much weight to lose.  WW is a great programme, but I realised that  isn't the programme for me.

Here is what I wanted to look for: something tailored to me and my body, something that requires real food and not shakes, bars or pills.  I wanted something that would help correct any imbalances in my body chemistry and I wanted something that would reteach me how to eat.  Now I know that sounds a little weird, but all these years of dieting and binging has left me feeling like I have no idea what my body needs or what balanced eating really looks like.

With all of that in mind, I decided to find myself a dietitian.  I did a lot of research into my local dietitian options and I finally found someone who I think would be able to help me.  Meeting with her would cost a lot of money, and I had to take that money out of my savings account, but I knew that this was the way forward for me.

So I arranged a session with her and met her for our discussion.

This is the first time I have ever seen a dietitian so I was pretty nervous.  She has asked me to bring with me a food diary for the previous few days as well as a paragraph around why I wanted to see her. What had lead me to this point and what I wanted out of our session.  The session was interesting and I learnt a lot about my body and what my eating and levels of stress are doing to my body.  She suggested a bunch of supplements to help re balance my body and she has said that I should consider moving to a wheat free/gluten free way of eating.

I went home and have made some pretty big decisions about how I am going to eat going forward.  About what I am going to put into my body and I know that it will take some getting used to but it really is the best thing for me.  I wasn't given a programme to follow, a quantity of food to eat at each meal or a list of foods to avoid. What I was told was that this is going to be a trial and error programme.  It's going to involve feeding my body what it needs and then listening to what it has to say. From there, I need to tweak what and when I eat accordingly. It's going to take some practise and I am pretty sure I won't get it right first time, but I am going to keep going with it. I am going to do my best, take it one day at a time and ask God to help me with this huge journey that I have ahead of me.

Today marks the first day of my Journey to 130.  I want to lose 130lbs and I am giving myself 24 months to achieve this - that is a goal of 5lbs a month.  To help hold myself accountable, I aim to weigh in once a week, to share my struggles and my journey.

I have an appointment at 4:30pm today.  I would be lying if I said that I wasnt just a little bit nervous but I am really hopping that it will be the turning point that I need to make some lasting changes in my weightloss journey.

Wish me luck and I will share more about these changes shortly.

Here we are, already half way through month 2 of 2012 and I am pleased to report that so far, things are going well with my move more eat well project.  January was a pretty good month for this journey, I lost a total of 8.5lbs and 18cm's over my body.  My fitness levels have improved with my increase in exercise and I have taken some time to work on my relationship with myself and with God.

Here are my two pages that sum up the January Journey.

JOURNALING: January was a great month. I am so proud of myself for so many things.  The first one being that every single day I tracked my WW points. There were days when I used more of my weekly extra’s than others, but every week I ended with a few points to spare.  Over the past two years, I have started the WW program several times and each time I only lasted a few days before giving in to a binge….but that was not the case this month despite several situations that would normally have prompted a binge.  Exercise is another thing that I am proud of, I haven’t done any sort of exercise in the last 12 months and here I began, on January 1st with a consistent average of 3 exercise sessions per week.  Some weeks I even managed 4, but at no point did I have less than 3.  I am convinced that this has helped me to lose 8.5lbs and 18cm’s this month.  One thing that seems to have stayed with me through January, is a blister on my foot.  It appears to have become a permanent fixture ….a daily reminder of all my hard work.  Which reminds me, perhaps I need to consider buying a better fitting pair of running shoes.
This month has also been about taking a look at my heart and restarting old hobbies that I really enjoy.  I have taken time out to work on my relationship with God and with myself and to start my studies.  January has been a pretty good month, all in all. I made better food choices, I moved more on a regular basis, I made some changes to how i think about myself and most importantly I can honestly say that I have grown.  I have taken steps forward, towards the life that I want and the story that I would like to be able to share.

From as far back as I can remember I have always had a Love/Hate relationship with my body.  When my eating was under control and my weight was on the average side, then I had a love relationship with my body.  BUT, over the past several years, my eating has been way out of control and as the weight began to pile on my confidence and self esteem dwindled and a hatred for my body took its place.  I felt like my body had betrayed me, it no longer looked in good in clothes and when i went shopping, i walked away feeling ugly and fat.  My body was supposed to be sexy and help me grow a baby and yet it was the furtherest it could be from sexy and while my number one hearts desire was to have a baby, my body seemed to be unwilling.

My dislike for my body has grown and grown over the years and to be honest, my relationship with my body has been really bad.  But this year, my Word for 2012 is Wholeness and I have come to realise that wholeness includes making some changes to my relationship with my body.  Learning to love who I am includes finding a way to love my body.

So, over the past few weeks I have been focusing on trying to figure out how to make changes to my relationship with my body.  Some days I feel like I am making progress and other days not so much, but I know that this is a process and that it is going to take some time.

Here are some things that I have been working on and will continue to work on over the next few months and most likely years:

Spend the money and buy some new clothes - As my body has gotten bigger and bigger, this has been a major thing for me.  I never want to spend money on bigger size clothing because in my mind I am either on a diet and will lose weight shortly or I am just about to start one.  The problem is that this has been going on for so long that I have very little to wear, and what i do have in my cupboard I only have because it fit or because its black.  Colour was not a part of my wardrobe and neither was the latest fashion. Jeans, tracksuit bottoms and baggy shirts were my only options.  I really think that my clothes helped to reinforce my bad relationship with my body.

Self talk - It's no secret that what we think about ourselves and what we say to ourselves either lifts us up or tears us down.  What was a surprise to me, was the harshness of that talk.  I took some time to make a note of what i was thinking and saying to myself and then i tried to figure out what i could replace those negative thoughts with to try to change the associated feelings.  This is much more difficult than it sounds and it is definitely going to take a conscious and consistent effort to get this right.

Remember that you have a choice - Being insecure allows for me to constantly worry about what other people are thinking of me.  The thing that I have been trying to remember is that they only have power over my feelings if I allow them to.  Despite what they think, or what I think they think, I can still feel good about myself.

Use your body to start loving your body - For the past five weeks I have been exercising a minimum of three times a week.  At first its difficult and your body really fights back, but after a while it gets easier and your body begins to thank you for a better fitness level, an avenue for stress relief and for treating it well.  Our bodies where created to be physical, not to sit around all day every day.  By moving my body on a regular basis, I have started to be more grateful for what it can do for me.

Careful what you talk about - This one is similar to the self talk except it is specific to what you say to others about your body and it's size.  It is so easy to find yourself complaining about what your body isn't doing or can't do.  Remember that what you say out loud, reinforces what you say within.  Be kind to yourself and to your body.

Like I said, I am by no means where i need to be but I am making progress.  One day, my body and I will be best of friends.

Welcome to month 1 of Move More Eat Less.
As part of my One Little Word for 2012, I made a decision to really make some changes in my life. By signing up to the MMEW 2012 class, I have made a commitment to this task but let's keep things honest here - I am terrified that i wont be able to keep this commitment. That life will get in the way and that i will give up.  I am going to do my best not to, but i would be lying if i said it wasn't running through my mind.
The class started with some pre-class work.  The idea for this class is to help you document the journey, but not spend all month on that process....thus leaving you time for the important parts of this class, the doing!  So, here are my two pre-class layouts.

My statement of intention for the year ahead as well as 5 things that i am good at.  A great way to focus my attention.

And then last week January's assignments came through.  These were tough, especially the taking a picture of yourself in your workout gear.  I want to be honest through this process and because of that, i took these photos in tight work out gear - leaving no room for hiding from the truth.  Now there is no way that i go to the gym like this or out in public, but for this task I have had to keep it real.

January's assignment is all about picking one thing and committing to it and then writing your story about your weight issues.  That part was much more difficult than i thought it would be, my eyes have been opened to a few things.

I have now documented how i got to this point and the exact reality of where this point it.  I have a long journey ahead of me but with God's strength I can overcome this.

Body image is a huge thing for us girls and i know that this is something that i battle with.  While its true that one list cannot automatically tell you how to turn negative body thoughts into positive body image thoughts, it can hlep you think about new ways of looking more at yourself and your body which are more beneficial to you.

The more you do that, the more likely you are to feel good about who you are and the body you were blessed with.  Appreciate all that your body can do. Every day your body carries you closer to your dreams. Celelbrate all of the amaizing things your body does for you - dancing, walking, breathing, laughing, dreaming etc.

So what can you do to improve your body image?

    • Try keeping a  top-10 list of things you like about yourself -- things that aren’t related to how much you weigh or what you look like. Read your list often. Add to it as you become aware of more things to like about you.
    • Remind yourself that “true beauty” is not simply skin-deep. When you feel good about yourself and who you are, you carry yourself with a sense of confidence, self-acceptance, and openness that makes you beautiful regardless of whether you physically look like a supermodel.
    • Beauty is a state of mind, not a state of your body. Look at yourself as a whole person. When you see yourself in a mirror or in your mind, choose not to focus on specific body parts. See yourself as you want others to see you -- as a whole person.
    • Surround yourself with positive people. It is easier to feel good about yourself and your body when you are around others who are supportive and who recognize the importance of liking yourself just as you naturally are.
    • Shut down those voices in your head that tell you your body is not “right” or that you are a “bad” person. You can overpower those negative thoughts with positive ones. The next time you start to tear yourself down, build yourself back up with a few quick affirmations that work for you.
    • Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you feel good about your body. Work with your body, not against it.
    • Become a critical viewer of social and media messages. Pay attention to images, slogans, or attitudes that make you feel bad about yourself or your body.
    Protest these messages:

    • write a letter to the advertiser or talk back to the image or message.
    • Do something nice for yourself -- something that lets your body know you appreciate it.
    • Take a bubble bath, make time for a nap, find a peaceful place outside to relax.
    • Reaching out to other people.

I have twenty one weeks until i had off to Iceland on holiday.  I am off to see the Northern Lights and visit the all natural warm baths.  While i am no fan of cold weather I am really looking forward this holiday.

The only problem with this exciting holiday is that it will require flying, which in itself is no problem, but i think its going to be a small plane which means small seats.  The cold weather means layers of clothing and at this moment in time my clothes only just fit - so finding layers is going to be a little difficult.  And don't even get me thinking about those natural warm baths and a swimming costume - the thought terrifies me. But i don't want all of this to stop me enjoying myself. So i am creating a twenty one week challenge with today being day one.

The challenge is to lose 32 pounds in twenty one weeks. That's 1 pound over 10 weeks and 2 pounds over 11 weeks.  I plan to exercise three times a week and follow the propoints plan. I get a treat once a week.

I aim to keep myself accountable by updating my blog every week.

Here's to changing my life - one choice at a time, one day at a time.

Today was the 5km Race for Life 2011 race.  At the beginning of the year, when we registered, I have great plans for training, losing weight and running the race.  As it turns out i am sad to share that i did no training, have actually gained weight and walked the race.

Not at all what i would have liked to have happen but having said all that, I did complete it and all things considered in a decent time.

     5km in 50 minutes.

And I have a medal to prove it!

But on a positive note today is my first day following the new pro-points Weight watchers plan.  And i even got some exercise in on the first day!!

Seeing as we have just started summer, i thought it would be a good idea to take part in a summer challenge.  I considered doing my own thing, but i think a group thing may keep me motivated....so, while listening to the radio i heard an advert by the NHS with regards to a summer challenge and logged on right away.

Leicester's Healthy Heart Summer Challenge - A summer walking challenge. Totally free, anyone can do it and they have a handy website where you can track your minutes.  Its a simple concept and with how busy the next few months are going to be for me i think its a great idea.

    Wish me luck!

Lately i have been a little hit and miss when it comes to eating.  I have been trying so hard to get a handle on this thing but the roots behind my struggle seems to go deeper than i first thought.

One of the things that i have learnt during my recent hours on the Internet researching my situation is that there are a few things that i can do for myself right now that may help.  So, this morning i got up, made myself a cup of tea and sat down with my laptop and paper to make a food plan for the coming week.

I was really pleased with the outcome.  I felt in control and best of all prepared!  On the left hand side of my paper i wrote down the days and meals and on the right hand side i made sure that i had some space to write my grocery list.  Everything that i needed to buy in one place and as i included everything for my week, there is no need for me to deviate from my list when i go shopping....saving my money, anxiety and hopefully despair.

I am totally open to making tweaks to this if it doesn't work, but for now I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

In three and a half weeks i turn 29. Next year its the big 30 and my goal is to be thin by thirty.  I have decided that this journey is going to be called Tales from the scales and my goal will be to weigh in at 170 pounds on September 11th, 2011. My goal is to have a BMI of less than 25.

Weight watchers, Rosemary Conley, Slimming World.............its all the same when it comes down to it. Calories in vs calories out. That is the bottom line.

I still have a few weeks until i decide which programme i am going to stick to.

So i have been feeling a little out of sorts for the past few weeks. A little overwhelmed with all that has been thrown at my life lately and if i am being honest i have been battling to juggle it all. Although all the obviously important things have been kept on top of, the not so obviously important things have been swept to the side under the disguise of not being as important.

So this weekend i decided to do something for me. To help lift my spirits just a little, to give me a bit of a boost with my exercise regime. To try to improve my health, physically, emotionally and mentally. Some time alone at home to catch up on things in general. Some out shopping, treating myself to new Nike+ sneakers, Nike+ sports kit and the all new exciting Ipod Nano 5th Generation. £200 is a way more than what i normally spend in one go or for myself, but it had to be done and i am pleased that i did it.

    Merry Christmas to me!

Wow, this year is just flying by. September is here again, and along with it a new start. I have booked this week off of work and i am so glad that i did. I have a few things planned, tomorrow is a big dentist appointment and Thursday evening is my British citizenship ceremony but other than that i am taking the time to relax, to refresh my spirit and to enjoy the last few days of summer.

This time of year is a little weird for me - now that i live in the UK September is the beginning of Fall, but growing up back in South Africa the beginning of September was the start of Spring. The start of fun to be had and a reminder that Christmas was just around the corner. This morning i decided to take the opportunity and walk to and from the gym. It was gorgeous out. The sun was shinning and the wind was blowing - it felt wonderful on my face. But here i sit, just four hours later and i am cold. The clouds are coming in and rain is on its way. The days are getting shorter and the evenings are getting darker earlier.

So, keeping that all in mind i have done a few things today to start off this new season, this new chapter of life and the final leg of 2009.
    - I went to the gym and updated my exercise goal sheet
    - I washed my bedding and everything else that is in sight (not that i only wash my bedding once every new season....lol)
    - I weighed in at 244.4lbs and made a new commitment to my health
    - I made a To Do list/goal list for September which will be sitting on my fridge shortly
    - I treated myself to strawberries and fat reduced cream for a late breakfast
    - I got my camera out and spent some time taking photographs

So to all my friends back home.....HAPPY SPRING DAY!
To all my friends everywhere else in the world.......HAPPY SEPTEMBER 1ST!

After reading Cathy's blog post earlier this week i realised that i really did need to give myself a stern talking to. I have been on the weight loss journey pretty much since January 2008 and although i have lost 51 pounds, most of that was at the beginning of my journey.

Over the past four months i lost ten pounds but if i am being honest with myself, and i have been very much this week, i admit that my heart has not been in it. I have been trying some days and not caring others. The hard work i do those days gets cancelled out by the naughty days.

So this morning i decided that today was my new first day. I am not going to look at what i have been doing the past few months. I have a fresh slate. A new beginning. A new starting weight and a new set of goals.

Today is the end of my first day and i am pleased to say that i have made good choices, written everything down and stayed within my points. No exercise today but i am looking after myself. A stressful week, a confrontational week, a tiring week - so i am taking tonight out for me.

Oh and by the way, Betty boo has nothing to do with my post - i just really like her!
