  • What do you do when you have two lovely women in your life who are going through a tough time? You find a way to encourage them....and if you can make it craft related then that is doubly as good!
While spending some time on pinterest I came across the idea of "open when..." letters. They have probably been around for a while but its first time that I have heard about them.

I nipped into town to pick up some envelopes and made a start on cutting in half a bunch of 4 x 6 sheets of patterned paper from my craft stash.  I rounded the corners using my circle punch and decorated the plain white envelopes with different Washi Tape.

After I spent some time doing the fun stuff above, I grabbed a notepad and jotted down some "Open when...." ideas.  As one set was going to my mom and the other to my friend, the typical ideas on the internet just weren't right. So, I had to come up with a number of them on my own.

The next part was the most difficult and time consuming part - writing the actual letters.  I wanted the letters to be perfect, to convey meaning and thoughtfulness and the exact wonderful words that would lift their spirits and encourage them.....and then i took a step back, checked my thoughts, and reminded myself that the goal here is not perfection but encouragement, blessings and relationship.

Along with each of the letters, I wanted to include one or two quotes which are small enough to pop on the mirror or slide into a handbag. This way they can take this out into the world with them and pull them out whenever a reminder was needed.  After selecting the quotes, I printed them out, pulled out my chopped up cards and got cutting.

Once I figured out the placing of the quotes on the card, I stuck them down with my double sided tape and popped them into the envelope.  For a portion of these envelopes that was it. Job done. For a few others, I included a few extra items like a chocolate, face mask, nail file. Just small things to add that little something extra. Final stage was putting it all together, creating a tag and then handing them over.

Overall it was a fun project. If you plan to do your own you'll need about four to six hours depending on the length and number of letters.  If you decide to have a go I would love for you to share.

My One Little Word for 2015 is open.

I knew what my word was going to be by the middle of November.  I purposely took time out in December to really focus on what I want for the new year ahead.  I considered what sort of things I wanted, how I wanted to feel at the end of it, what sorts of experiences I wanted to have and what sort of goals I wanted to achieve.

There were several words that I could have chosen that encompass all that I had journalled and worked through but each time I came back to my original word. Now there are no wrong words when it comes to One Little Word but I knew that this was the right word to accompany me on the journey that this year will bring.

Open began with this desire that I have been fighting with to begin looking for a new romantic relationship.  I knew that in order for me to be brave enough to put myself out there, to trust someone again, that I would have to be open. Open to meeting guys despite how nervous even the thought of that makes me, open to being vulnerable, open to failing and open to the future that this might bring.

This led me to begin to think about other experiences that I have been avoiding or shying away from the past few years.  On December 5th, I graduated from university with a psychology degree.  I have been doing this part time for the past six years leaving very minimal time and financial resources for real holidays.  As part of my reward to myself for completing my degree, I have been saving up to go on a real life adventure.....and the time has finally come to book it.  This adventure isn't until September but I want to be ready by that time to be open to meeting new people, open to really enjoying this adventure and open to trying new things. I don't want to sit on the side lines while everyone else is having fun and taking part in exciting activities.

From here I moved on to another thing that I need to be open to. Now this one is a bit of a tough one but a necessary one. I want to be open to doing hard things. To seeing them through and not giving up. To knuckle down and get the job done - even when I don't think that I can.

As I started spending more and more time thinking about this word and the year ahead other areas began to come to mind like:

I want to be open to new challenges at work.
I want to be open to putting in the effort to nurture friendships both old and new.
I want to be open to further exploring my gifts & talents.
I want to be open to living a life wrapped up in grace.
I want to be open to taking the time to play and make a creative mess.
I want to be open to loving fiercely.
I want to be open to embracing whichever season of life I find myself in.
I want to be open to wearing colorful clothes and finding my clothing style.

I can honestly say that I am looking forward to this journey with my new word.

I thought it would be fun to end my week sharing my current favourite things. It feels like a nice way to round up the work week and open up to the weekend.

One. My bracelet for my One Little Word 2015 arrived this week and I love it.  I bought it from Etsy and it has taken a while to get here but it was definitely worth the wait.  My word for this year is Open  and I am so excited to see where this word is going to take me.

Two. This week I finally got to wear my new Sketchers trainers for Zumba. I got them for Christmas but ended up hurting my ankle early on in January and wasn't able to do a lot of exercise. My ankle isn't 100% better but its definitely on the mend and I am being very careful with it. Sketchers are my all time favourite trainer but I haven't had a pair since I lived in America. So pleased to have picked these up and at a bargain price.

Three. If you haven't seen this video yet you are definitely missing out.  This has been doing the rounds on YouTube and Facebook and I am in love with the song.  If you haven't heard it listen to it a time or two and let me know what you think.

Four. I love a bargain and for the most part, I'm pretty good at picking things up at a fraction of the price.  This was one of those moments.  As I am starting Project Life this year I wanted to pick up a typewriter for my journaling.  If I'm being honest, I didn't even think that you could get them anymore but, if you know where to look, there are loads around. I picked mine up from Gumtree and even managed to talk her down in price. It has made such a pretty addition to my craft room and I can't wait for the new ribbon to arrive so that I can start to play.

Five. Since Boxing day we have had a lot of snow.  Growing up in South Africa didn't leave me with any opportunities to see or play in snow but now, I get more than I would like.  The one thing that I can say that I like about this white stuff, is just how pretty it makes everything look.

What have been the favourite moments recently?

Listening to Elevation Worship while doing things around the house. I am loving their albums and am so grateful for sites like YouTube. My favourite album at the moment is Kingdom Come which is pretty much on repeat.

Drinking lots of hot chocolate at the moment. Between this cold weather and trying to manage my cravings for real, calorie laden chocolate - this is the very next best thing.

Watching not as much TV as I did a month ago. I am trying to be more intentional about how I spend my time. Less time watching TV means more time doing fun things like reading, writing in my journal, cooking nice meals and scrapbooking.

Reading nothing and everything at the moment.  I am sort of between books right now and can't decide what to read next.

Wanting to win a typewriter on eBay. The listing finishes in two and a half hours and I am itching to win it for my project life album.

Attempting to embrace a job that hasn't turned out to be what I thought it would be.  A job that isn't challenging me at all. That is allowing me lots and lots of time to take things easy.  I'm not used to this sort of job and I'm not sure if I am wanting to stay in it.....but I figured that while I am in this role I need embrace the down time and perhaps make the most of it.

Feeling expectant about when my parcels are going to arrive. It feels like the mail is terrible at the moment and is either taking ages to arrive or is getting lost.

Taking a few moments to shower lots of love upon Smidge. He is so soft and sweet.

Grateful that I could get the my shed roof fixed before the rain returned. The roof felt was blown off in the strong winds Saturday morning and with a rainy week ahead I don't want to give the wooden roof an opportunity to soak in the water and begin to rot.

If you have grown up going to church, the word Grace is something that you hear a lot. In fact, I think that Grace has become a popular word outside of church too.....although, I'm not sure that it is easily or clearly defined wherever you hear it. For me, Grace has always been a bit of an abstract, "out there" type of word. Something that I knew was powerful. Something that I knew was a gift. But something that I couldn't put into my own words.

And through this, life was happening.  Exciting, scary, difficult, big, small things.  Things that make you question who you are and where your life is going. Things that leave you wondering if you would change things if you could. That leave you comparing your worst to everyone else's best.

Now, although I have said all of that, I wouldn't be sharing my story in a balanced way if I left it there. Nope, that is not the full story of my life these past few years. There have been good things. I have been really blessed. I have worked hard to move forward from some of those experiences and situations.  I continue to work on staying away from comparison and every day I focus on being who I am.

And then a couple of months ago I started coming across the word Grace. In discussions with friends, in articles on the internet, in blog posts.  And this word started settling into my soul, into my inner self. It kept making its way into my thoughts and my self talk.

During my prep work for 2015, I spent some time on Pintrest looking for a quote for this year. Something that I could use as a bit of a mantra. Something that will lift my spirits when the challenges of life show up. Something that whispers quietly to my soul. Something that stirs up peace within me. Something that overflows encouragement. And which quotes spoke to me the most? The ones about Grace.

I feel like this quote chose me instead of the other way around. I feel like it holds big promises and big responsibility. I feel like its going to really stretch me.

Now, sitting at the beginning of this year, I'm not all that much clearer on what Grace actually means or what it looks like in everyday life ,,,,,but I feel like this is going to change as I focus and sit with this word during the year.  Right now I feel like Grace means cutting myself some slack when I need it, when I have done my best but things outside my control have prevented me from doing what I had planned.  I aim to reflect on the word each month as we move through this year and look for the Grace in the everyday. I don't not what it will look like but I am sure that it is going to make for a great journey as I continue to live and document my life.

So what is my quote for this year I hear you say? Well let me share.....

If you have a quote for the 2015 I would love for you to share it in the comments below.

I am by no means a beauty guru but I thought it would be fun to share the items which have become my favorite during 2014. I would love to hear from you if you use any of these and what you think about them.

So here goes - and its probably worth saying that this is not in any specific order:

    1. MAC gel eyeliner in Blacktrack | This eyeliner has been my favorite for about the last three years. It glides on smoothly, is easy to apply and lasts all day.  While Mac products are on the more expensive side, for me anyway, this lasts a really really long time and is great value for money.

    2. Benefits Gimme Brow in shade medium | Other than making sure my brows were regularly tidied, I never really paid much attention to them. And then I watched a beauty tutorial and fell in love with this product. I ordered mine off of eBay and never looked back.  You can really tell the difference between wearing and not wearing it and I just find that it really completes my makeup look,

    3. Essie nail polish in shade Chinchilly | I always get compliments when I wear this polish - its gorgeous and looks great with every outfit. Again, its a little more pricey than some of the high street brands but I find it lasts ages on my nails.

4, Urban Decay Subversion Primer | This is another item that I saw while watching some beauty videos on YouTube and knew I had to try it. My brother picked it up for me for my birthday and I don't think that I will every be able to do without it.  It is amazing the difference that it makes on your lashes. I love it.  I will definitely be purchasing this again.

    5. Color Tattoo in the shade On and On Bronze | I found this by accident while shopping at Boots. I actually meant to pick up a completely different eye shadow but somehow this found itself in my cart.  I really like it. It adds some shine to my eyelid which I think looks so nice.  My only wish for this product is that it would come with some sort of application tool that didn't require me to use my finger tip.

    6. Burt's Bees Tinted Balm | I am not a big fan of lipstick. One of my goals this year to wear more of it; to try both bright and muted colors. But for now I turn to my trusty Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm.  It keeps my lips moisturized and adds just a hint of color.

    7. Smashbox Color Corrector Primer | This product works wonders on my face. I tend to have a bit of a rosey hue which, after a long day of wearing makeup, is pretty visible from underneath my foundation.  This little beauty sits underneath my foundation and somehow neutralizes the redness. It is amazing and a definite must have for those special occasions and important events.

    8. Essie Good To Go Topcoat | I love having my nails painted. It makes me feel feminine and put together. While a good polish is important, a topcoat is a must have. This is my all time favorite topcoat and I am convinced that it is this that allows my nail polish to last 7-10 days despite washing dishes and daily showers.

    9. Palmer's Firming Butter | I am trying to be more consistent at using body lotion. This stuff is great. It smells good and is soaked up by my skin pretty quickly.  I am not a fan of bodybutter's at all, however this doesn't have that same greasy texture.

    10. No 7 Total Renewal Micro Exfoliator | I use this twice a week and its like having a spa in your home. This stuff is gentle on my skin but leaves it feeling so smooth and clean.  I have bought countless tube's of this and will probably continue to do so for many years to come.

I thought it might fun to do a little Currently post for Smidge. He is such a big part of my life and makes me so happy that it only seems fair to capture some things of his little life.

Enjoying eating | Whatever is on my plate. From tomatoes to porridge to Christmas cake and everything in between.  If he could, he would eat everything that I do - meal for meal.

Watching | He loves watching for things from the window on the first floor and then, when he spots something from up there that catches his eye, he races downstairs and straight out the cat flap. Nothing gets in his way when he is heading outside!

Listening | He is a bit of a scardy cat and yesterday a helicopter flew over the house. The poor little guy raced upstairs and hid under the duvet cover until the noise went away.

Favorite spot | His favorite spot to sleep is on a pillow on my chair in my office.  The house is full of warm beds and comfy couches and instead he chooses to sleep on a chair under the table.

Magic power | coming down the stairs on his belly. He doesn't believe in walking down the stairs. Nope! He slides down, head first, until he gets to the bottom.

2014 was the first year that I decided to take part in Ali Edwards One Little Word online class. My word was Intention and my main goal for choosing it was for me to be more intentional about the way that I spent my time.  I didn't want to go to meetings just for sake of meetings. I wanted to say no to meetings when there wasn't a need for them and I wanted to ensure that any meetings I held had a clear and defined purpose.  I wanted to be intentional at home as well. Intentional about how much effort I put into my final course for uni and I wanted to be intentional about losing weight.

Between January and July I did each monthly prompt. I completed it and really enjoyed it.  Then studies for the final exam started and my One Little Word project took a back seat.  By the middle of October my exam was written and I finally had some time to catch up on the prompts that I had missed.

After watching all the videos, I realized that some of the prompts weren't worth  me doing.  I was disappointed with how my year had turned out and even more disappointed that I hadn't stopped at some point to really reevaluate how things were going. A lot of things that happened last year was outside of my control, but having said that, I did have a choice over how I dealt with them. How I spent my time. It took me a few weeks to work through my feelings about this but eventually I came to realize that I couldn't go back and change things so had to take what I could learn from it and move forward.

The overall experience of One Little Word was really good. I love the idea of picking a word, reflecting on it monthly and documenting your journey with the word.  What I learnt through this experience which I will be applying to my One Little Word journey during 2015 is the following:

    • Its not enough to simply do the prompts each month. You really have to live with your word. Day by day, decision by decision. That is how you get the most out of this experience.
    • Make it visible. Keep your word where you can see it. On your phone. On your computer. In your kitchen and bedroom. Even in your car.
    • Spend time with your word. With what it means. With how you want it to impact on your life and your decisions. This is not a once a month tick list job. If you want to get the most out of it, figure out early on what you want from it. What you really want.
My word for 2015 is Open and in a few weeks I will be writing about my word and why I chose it.  Do you have a word for this year?

Oh my gosh, this is the best sausage casserole that I have ever made or tasted!  This is definitely going to become a regular in my menu planning. I found the recipe of the BBC Food recipes website and the original recipe is actually from the Hairy Bikers. I have adapted it slightly for my own tasting so feel free to do the same if you give it a try.

    What I used

    6 Heck gluten free sausages
    150g unsmoked diced lean bacon
    Chopped onion
    Sliced mushrooms
    400g tinned tomato with herbs
    400g butterbeans
    A squirt of tomato puree
    Frylite spray
    Smoked paprika
    400ml vegetable stock
    A dash of Worcestershire Sauce
    2 bay leaves
    A bit of Splenda
    Mixed herbs
    Salt & pepper
    Garlic
    Chutney

    How I made it

Using a cast iron pot, I coated the bottom of the pot with frylite and browned my sausages. Once they were browned I took them out of the pot and kept them on a plate.

I then added the bacon, onion and garlic and fried them until cooked.

I added the rest of the ingredients except the butter beans and sausage and mixed well.

Once the sauce was boiling, the sausages went back into the pot and it cooked for 15 minutes.

Once the timer went off, I added the butter beans and cooked for a further 10 minutes. I served this with vegetables however you can include mash or rice if you like.

I am currently following the Weight Watchers plan. The casserole itself made 3 good sized portions and worked out to 10 pro points per serving.

    Tips

If you are following Weight Watchers and want to reduce the points for the meal, feel free to use low fat sausages instead of the Heck sausages.

If you want a little more spice then add some chilies or chili powder.

Feel free to use chicken stock instead of vegetable.  The recipe calls for chicken but I didn't have any.

It might be just as nice using different beans if you wish. I may try cannellini beans next time.

Well, I hope you liked this. If you are looking for something new then I would definitely give this a try. Feel free to let me know if you enjoyed it.

2015 sees the start of my first ever Project Life album.  I am so excited to have started this project but I sort of feel like I need to take a step back and document the story of before Project Life, before moving forward.

You see, I used to be a scrapbooker. I think it was back in 2007/2008 that I first started. At the time I was engaged, living with my fiance and had a couple cute kitties. I loved documenting our life. What we got up to. Who we were together. Who I was as an individual. I filled about four 12 x 12 albums. And then I chose to end things.  Fast forward a few years by which point I had gotten my own place and had started to settle into it and into my new life.  My scrapbooking stash came out but I wasn't in a place emotionally to document.  I felt like I didn't have anything to share. That being single meant my life was not interesting, exciting or important enough to share. So I boxed it all up and put it away.

Last year I signed up to One Little Word 2014. It was probably the first time since putting my stash away that I had begun to be creative with my stash again. I absolutely loved it! Getting messy, documenting my life, my thoughts, my goals and dreams. It was exactly what I needed and I realized that being creative was good for my soul.

As I started to do some prep work for 2015, I realized that my thinking about my life not being worthy enough to document had been tainted.  The life that I am living is who I am right now. It is what makes me who I am and that is worthy of documenting. I hope that I will be blessed enough to one day have a family, and how special will it be for my children and even grandchildren to see the person that I was before they came along. This is why I decided that this year would be the year that I start Project Life.  I have something to say and I want to share it.

So this is my plan for how I hope to approach Project Life this year.

Album size and page protectors: I plan do to a 12 x 12 album using predominantly Project Life Design A page protectors.  While most pages will be this size and design, I do know that I like to mix things up so am fully expecting to have some random size pages and designs in my album.  Case in point, my 2015 title page is an 8.5 x 11.

Filler cards: I knew that I would not want to stick to only one core kit. I would get bored of it very quickly and then the money I had spent would be left sitting in my craft room.  So I have purchased a few taster kits, made a few of my own 3 x 4 cards (which you can see below) and signed up to Studio Calico's monthly Project Life kits.  I will see how this goes and make adjustments as needed.

Photographs: I plan to print my own photos at home using my Canon printer.  While a few will be in sizes 6x4 and 3x4, I will also probably do a lot of 2x2's and 3x3's. This will be me space on the cards for embellishments and journaling.  Most of my photo's will also be taken using my Iphone. It's just easier to grab and goes everywhere with me. When I have some special events I will grab my Lumix camera and use that instead.

Frequency: As I said earlier in the this post I am currently single. I have therefore decided to do project life monthly rather than weekly. And there it is. I am sooooo excited about taking on this project and documenting my life.
