Live Brave

  • For the life of me I can't remember who used to say "An attitude of gratitude", but i know that someone in my childhood used to say it on a regular basis and to this day, when things get tough, this saying pops into my head.  I have found that a definite way to turn a bad day into a better day, is to take 5 minutes and think about those things in your life that you can be grateful for.

Let's take a minute here as i could definitely do with making one of these today!
    • That in less than two weeks I will be going on a girls holiday with my mom
    • That I will soon be turning 30 and have made it this far in life
    • That I have job that not only challenges me but that is close to home
    • Good books - I am reading a lot of those at the moment
    • That my family are no longer half way across the country and that I know have up close and personal support from them
    • For my car which never gives me problems and always gets me where I need to be
    • For my Heavenly Father who loves me in spite of what I do or who I am
    • Music
    • For the ability to be able to afford to live on my own
    • My deep desire to keep trying, to keep striving for the best

I have now been single for just over three and a half years. I have a new job that i find challenging and stressful yet, for the most part, enjoyable.  I have made more steps forward than i can count including getting my credit status improved and having things around me which leave me feeling comfortable like a safety net savings account. I have a little car who is my very first car and i live in a beautiful one bedroom flat on the outskirts of both town and the countryside.

And while i have all of this there are still times where i find myself lonely, down, depressed and questioning. I know that the one area in which i lack is relationships, don't get me wrong i have friends and family who care about me - but i don't have that special man in my life and i don't have those "girlfriends" that i always wanted.  Most of my true friends (those who really know me and get me) are in different countries and so this is how i find myself where i am today.

Normally i am very good with being by myself. Spending time with myself and doing things alone are not much of a problem for me. I know who i am and what i need to work on and while i am trying to find a way to work on those things, i am finding myself down in the dumps today.

And then i remembered two things.  The first is that over the past few weeks i seem to be coming across the same lesson over and over. That lesson is that its not simply enough to read or listen to what you need to do to bring about changes you actually have to put together an action plan and then DO IT!  Ideas without action are just that.....ideas.  The second thing that i remembered was this post that i read a few days ago about fighting the blues while wondering if this is it.  I cant remember where i saw it so apologies for not being able to give the appropriate credit but this is what i remember from that post and these are the actions that i plan to take to get me to where i need to be....

    * Compartmentalize the suck
List the activities in your life that you do on a daily basis - cooking, cleaning, commuting, studying.  I am sure it would be fair to say that some of these activities would carry more sucky weight than others.  Take some time and have a good think about those aspects of your daily life that are bringing you down; experiment a little bit with compartmentalizing the suck.  For example, how would i feel if i left everything the same but didn't watch TV?  How would i feel if i left everything that but walked to walk?

Once you have pinpointed those areas which suck the most, work to lesson or remove them from your life.  If its the drive to work that gets you down, bike it or get an awesome podcast to listen to. If you hate ironing, look at getting someone else to do it.  The opportunities are endless - just think outside the box.

    * Get rid of the TV
This is huge for me and one that i am seriously contemplating.  TV shows promote unrealistic lifestyles and body types.  Time seems to slip into a black hole when you turn that thing on.

Instead of spending hours in front of the TV, consider spending time with friends, going for a run or trying a new exercise class, try a new restaurant, volunteer somewhere or try a complicated recipe.  If you need something a little more relaxed take a bubble bath, read a book, have a quiet time, listen to the radio or a podcast, Skype with friends in different countries.

The idea here is not necessarily to give up all TV time, but consider watching only those programmes that you really enjoy, or watching only an hour of TV a day during the week and the same or two hours per day over the weekend.

    * Craft some fantastic new goals
Your life is only what it is if you decide it is!

Think about the things in life that really excite you. Travel, fashion, study - whatever it is, set yourself some goals involving those things that excite you. Remember that where you currently are, is only one phase of your live, tomorrow or in a weeks time or even in five years time, you may find yourself in a completely different phase in your life.  If you don't like this phase, work hard to move onto the next one!

    * Do new things
If you find that you truly are not in a position to navigate yourself out of your current phase of life, then consider instead doing mini-new things!

How about a new recipe, a new vegetable or type of meat, a new body wash, a different park or drink at Starbucks.  When we start making mini changes we begin to realise that the world does not actually come crashing to a halt. With each mini-new thing you try, you begin to build your confidence to try bigger and better new things.

And so, after reading all of this i couldn't walk away without putting together an action plan for at least the week ahead.

    * Watch no more than 1 hour of TV an evening
    * Have a pamper evening

Being organized is the only way that i am currently managing to make it through the weeks without forgetting the important things.....and even then i sometimes find that i didn't around to doing that thing that needed doing.

A few weeks ago i came across the Life Planners created by Erin Condren and i completely feel in love with them.  I didn't even mind the slightly higher than what i would normally pay price for these as, in my opinion, they would be worth every penny i spent.  Unfortunately, the international shipping on them pretty much costs the same as the Life planner does and that i just can't do.  So, i spent a few hours searching the net to try find a similar item but i couldn't really find anything that i liked...you know what's like when you found the one you want but you cant have it.

But then i stopped att WH Smiths to look for some new pens and i happened to come across this gorgeous Winne the Pooh Diary.  Its colourful, has a week at a glance view and has enough cute, pages in it to make me love it!

So, here is to the next 12 months together Pooh.....

This weekend has been a very productive one.  Friday evening i picked up my new pillow, met my parents and brother at MacDonald's for a celebratory dinner for my Mom ( her choice - i tried to convince her to go somewhere else) and then went on to do my grocery shopping.  By 8pm i was home with the groceries unpacked and that's when the bizarreness began....I started to clean.  And not just a few things around the house - i mean the entire kitchen, the fridge inside and out and all the cupboards. I washed down the counters, the oven and even the floors.  By 11:15 i was exhausted and ready for bed.
Saturday morning began with a Berry Oat Smoothie.  Yum!  Amazingly, the cleaning bug was still around and i followed on the kitchen cleaning with the bathroom and the bedroom!  Until I uploaded this video, i didn't realise just how many books i have sitting on my nightstand.  I guess there is no denying just how much i love to read!
With all the time that i am spending working and studying, I am finding that all the unfinished tasks that i have lying around my place have really been adding to my stress levels.  I guess it just seemed like a good idea to get all those little things finished and out the way.  Once that was all done i was free to make a start on my seen question for my psych exam.
That involved reading the relevant chapter in the textbook, listening to the audio clip, finding the relevant papers on the net.  Sunday saw me writing up all the notes for this chapter. In order to create my draft for the exam, i need to see everything in front of me. It looks pretty cool and at the moment i would say that 80% of it is still sitting inside my head - not bad!

Making sure that i try to get some me time in my life to balance everything out, i decided to spend a few hours this weekend watching a movie at home, reading a magazine or two, blog redecorating and posting, baking some bran muffins and listening to a REALLY REALLY good podcast by Joyce Meyer on Simplifying your life.
And to top it off, i cooked myself a delicious Sunday meal. I haven't cooked properly, as in protein, carbs and veg for a few weeks now and i realised how much i missed it.  I am also pleased to say that i spent most of the time with the television off and the radio on.  Having music on in the background is probably what helped me to get so many of those nagging jobs completed.
Well, its 7:30 on Sunday evening and i have a few hours left of the weekend. I plan to take a shower, wash the dishes, spend some time with my Heavenly Father, watch the new episode of Royal Pains and end my evening with a few pages of my latest book.

I hope your weekend was as productive and nice as mine was.

Tonight I say goodbye to my dear pillow.  Now i know, that to some, this is going to sound very strange but I have had my pillow for about 7 years. From the very first moment that i laid my head down to rest on it I was in Love.  The way it cradeled my head and allowed me to sleep so soundly.  The way it gave me comfort and sweet dreams.

Despite the years of togetherness, i have recently begun to realise that our time together may be coming to an end.  Sleepless nights, stiff shoulders and waking up with headaches has just reinforced the idea that it is time to part ways and move on.

So it is with a sadness in my heart that tonight i say good bye to an old friend and hello to a new one. May we share many great nights in the future, taking on countless new adventures.

Happy to be fully healed from all the teeth work that i have had over the past 18 months now.  It's be a roller coaster ride but i am very happy to be off that one and moving onto the next.  Happy to be proud of myself for not only being brave but for not giving up on myself!

Working with a tight deadline in mind.  Two months today i will be writing my Child Development Psychology exam which means that while the next two months include 35 days of work, 7 days of holiday, 2 birthdays, 1 TMA and  countless hours of studying, it also means that in two months i will have my life back and can start to pay more attention me!

A notorious bookworm. I love reading books and have done for as long as i can remember.   I used to always win awards at primary school for the most books read and it has something that i have always felt good about.  Now, as an adult, I seem to constantly have a pile of books that are waiting to be read. As quickly as i can get through them, i appear to buy them.  Books make me happy!  There is no getting away from it.

A little obsessed with my mom's Bran Muffins. These have been my breakfast obsession for the past 3 weeks now.  As a little girl, my mom used to make these for us and i remember hating them .  The idea of eating Bran muffins were just too healthy an idea for my sweet tooth.....but now it is totally the opposite. I LOVE them and find that they keep full all morning. Perfect for a busy morning at work.

Counting the number of days until we Jet Set to America. My mom and I are going on our first mother/daughter holiday and i am sooo looking forward to it.  Flights are booked, hotel rooms booked, tickets purchased and now we are just waiting to pick up our currency, pack our bags and head off for an amazing week!

In love with my flat. I have been here for a year and a half now and i still love it.  Its cosy, and warm and just perfect for me.

You know when you have those moments where you hear something or read something and the power of those words hits you squarely in your soul?  That's what happened to me this afternoon.

I was taking a break from TMA 06, catching up on some blogs and I came across this message from Jillian Michaels.  It stopped me in my tracks.

Why not me?  I read through it over and over again and each time i felt my that part of myself completely identify with the reasons why it wasn't me, the reasons why it could possibly not be me....especially the healthy love and the healthy body.  Why is it that, if i am being completely honest with myself, that i feel as if i don't deserve these things?  I should know that i am special, that i am unique, that i am the daughter of my heavenly Father and for that reason alone i have value and worth.  And yet i don't feel like i should, like i don't deserve any of it.  Like it cant possibly be me who could get these things.  And then another layer to this hits me and i realise that while i feel as if i don't deserve any of it, the honest truth is that i don't.  It's only by grace that i deserve these things, and yet while i know that God's grace is for everyone, i still don't feel like i should be able to tap into this grace thing. Clearly, this needs reconciling and perhaps i wont ever get past this if i don't find a way to reconcile my shortcomings with God's grace.

The only thing that i know for sure is that in an ideal world i do deserve all the above and more.  And i know that i wont be able to get there on my own so Lord, please help me.

Cambridge was awesome!  I had such a great weekend.  The culture and architecture of that city was so amazing.  And a day off work was very much needed.  Other than the old buildings, there are two things you notice when driving into Cambridge....No.1 - all the green parks and No.2 - all the bicycles everywhere.  It's like there is this entire additional road system going on that i had no clue about.  I would say it is a safe bet to say that there were more bicycles than cars on the roads of Cambridge.

The revision weekend itself was good. I realised that there is a lot i do know and i lot that i don't.  Cambridge University left me speechless.  Our dinning hall still has no electricity and all our meals were held by candle light.  The furniture was made of gorgeous, old, solid wood and everything was nothing but the best.

After spending full days revising, we spent the evening punting on the river and eating dinner along the waterfront.  The weather was perfect and we walked everywhere. I made a lovely friend and got to know so many people.

All in all, it was a wonderful weekend.

OK, so that's a little dramatic but hey....why not!

Tomorrow will see me heading off to the town of Cambridge in the heart of England.  With all its history, architecture, beautiful scenery and shopping i would be lying if i said i wasn't as giddy as a girl on Christmas.

I am heading over to Cambridge University for a revision weekend for my Psychology course and while it is rather expensive I am hoping it will be worth it.  It officially starts Friday evening at 4pm, but i have taken the day off work and making an early start on the long weekend. A few hours to enjoy the surroundings, the shopping, the buildings and the rest that i am hoping will come with it.

My camera is packed and ready for action whenever i am not being very studious with my nose in a book.
