  • Not only did I start doing Project Life in 2015 but I also signed up to Ali Edwards monthly Story Kits,,,,and I am so happy that I did!  April's kit has just arrived and so far I have loved each of the three kits I have received (one has gone missing and I am just waiting on the replacement). So much so that I will be signing up again once my six month subscription is up.

If you haven't heard about the Story Kit is basically works like this. Each month Ali chooses a theme or idea to help us tell the stories of our lives. January's theme was gatherings/gather.  One of the things that I love so much about these ideas is that they can mean different things to different people and you can use them in a multitude of different ways; whatever works with where you are in life.

I did a two page layout on a week that I had off work back in February for this months story. The front page is an adaption of the "Currently" concept in the sense of having jumping off prompts such as Enjoying, Browsing, Thinking About, Sending, Listening, Watching, Shopping For, Hanging and Building.

The other side of the page consists of a gathering of ordinary every day moments that make up my life. I love how each picture comes with a little story and how those little stories together, tell an even bigger one.

These kits are fantastic and consist of a lot of content.  I still have a lot more stash left from this kit and will be using it in project life and perhaps a few additional layouts.  At the start of the year I signed up to this kit as well as the Studio Calico monthly Project Life Kit and I am much happier with Ali's kit than I am Studio Calico.

Its was one month yesterday since I enjoyed one of the biggest, exciting and proudest days in my life so far.  After six long years I graduated University with a Bsc Honors Psychology degree!

Six years is a long time.  When I started I didn't really give much thought to those six years. Studying part time while working full time was enough of a mountain to focus on.  But here I am, six years later, and looking back it feels like it took a life time to get where I am now.  I changed jobs four times (although stayed in the same company the entire time), I moved home three times, I purchased a house, I worked through a big relationship breakup, I became a British citizen, I went on five vacations and two summer schools. Looking back it has been a jam packed six years.

I love to learn. Learning is actually one of my Top 5 strengths according to StrengthsFinder 2.0 but along this journey there have definitely been several times when all I have wanted to do was give up. Pack it all in and not bother. BUT I am so glad that I stayed the course and saw this thing through to the end.

Graduation day was definitely a day that I will remember. While I was excited about it, I wasn't really prepared for the emotions that came along with it.  Not only from my parents but from me as well. I am so proud of myself. I remember thinking a number of times " You've made it girl!  You actually did it!"  I can honestly say that all the hard work, all the sacrifice, all the summer afternoons and weekends missed were worth it.

Walking across that stage probably took no longer than 90 seconds.....but it felt like it was taking place in slow motion.  Despite the auditorium being full to capacity, I felt like I was the only one in the room. My sole goal was to walk across the stage, accept my degree, and not trip...lol.  I am grateful to say all those things were achieved!

The day was magical.  The experience unforgettable. The feelings overwhelming.  My goal for this day was to enjoy it, to be present in the moment and to soak up everything around me. Mission accomplished in every way.

One thing that happened that I wasn't expecting was a realisation. A thought that occurred to me a number of times and sat with me after the day had ended.  I need to celebrate the things in my life, both big and small. I haven't been very good at doing that in the past. Acknowledging the small steps taken, the big goals achieved hasn't been a priority but by living this way, I have been missing out.....and I am not going to be living this way anymore.

So here is to celebrating all my hard work, achieving my goal and enjoying the moments of the day to the fullest.

Books have always been a part of my life. I remember getting certificate after certificate at school for the most books read.....each and every year. Saying that I LOVE books feels like a bit of an understatement but it's the best that I can do. I absolutely love reading.  In the past six years, my free time for reading anything was pretty much non-existent thanks to studying for my degree, but now that my studies are finished and I have my degree, I have dived head first back into reading. Reading books just for fun. Reading books for development. Reading books for inspiration in life. I have a reading list a mile long and I find myself adding to it almost weekly.

One of my goals for 2015 is to read six books. When I made that goal I thought that would be pretty doable as that is roughly one book every 8 weeks.  However, here I sit, almost at the end of April and I have already read four books this year. My goal of six is going to be reached by the end of May and smashed by the end of the year. I love it!

I thought it would be good to do some reviews on the books a few times during the year. That way I could either introduce you to some new reads or give you my view if its one you already know about but weren't sure if you should go ahead with it or not.  Please note that the categories that I have put the books into are my own opinions as opposed to what the author may have originally intended them to be.

To Protect and Serve - Staci Stallings
    Christian Fiction - Kindle
I downloaded this book for free from Amazon kindle around Christmas time last year.  I was looking for a new fiction book and thought this looked like a good option. It was a nice and easy read. The characters were interesting and the story line held my attention.  The only negative that would say about this story is that at times it was a little on the predictable side. You could see what was coming and a few pages in you find yourself reading what you thought you would. All in all it was a nice book but it wouldn't be at the top of my recommendation list.

Make It Happen - Lara Casey
    Self Help - Paperback
I came across Lara's power sheets last year and was very interested in them. Unfortunately the postage associated with getting this item shipped to the UK was more than the cost of the item and therefore I never went ahead with the purchase.  And then I came across her book.  I have seen mixed reviews from different people but I personally loved her book.  Yes I guess there is nothing really new around her goal setting steps however what made it ace for me was the structure she gave to it. From the very start to the very last review everything is clearly mapped out and that I love.  I would recommend this to friends and will likely read through it again in time to set next years goals.

The Darkside Of Fat Loss - Sean Croxton
    Health - ebook
As far as I am aware, you can only get this book from Sean's website. It took me about 3 days to read and is all about fat loss and the health of your body.  This book turned the way I see food and my body on it's head. It;s all about being healthy in order to lose fat rather than losing fat in order to become healthy. I have been following his approach to food for two weeks now and I am enjoying it.  He focuses on healthy fats, protein and carbs from fruit and veg while avoiding processed foods, sugar and simple carbs.  For me personally, the one thing that his way of eating offers that I have not come across before is his 80/20 guide.  Eat this way 80% of the time and enjoy those foods which don't meet the criteria 20% of the time.  It's weird but I feel like I have permission to have something off plan without feeling like I have come off the plan. It's been lacking for me when following other food plans and I honestly love this concept.  Its probably worth mentioning that I don't follow everything that he suggests, purely because I believe in baby steps.  I think that this book is definitely worth a read if you are interested in how foods impact your body and what you can do to help your body heal.

To Principle Of The Path - Andy Stanley
Christian Self help - Audible book
This was the first, and probably last, audible book that I have listened to.  I didn't enjoy listening to the book or the book itself.  Audible aside, I like the main point of the book. The fact that your actions decide your path, but I found that the book repeated itself a lot. It seemed that it could have been more concise and shorter.  I normally enjoy Andy Stanley but I probably wouldn't this book of his to anyone.

I hope that you have found my reviews helpful. I would love to hear your thoughts on any of these and any books that you are currently reading.

One of the things that I have done for myself this year is intentionally put aside time to create. Some days I get up an hour earlier than normal while other days I turn off the television in the evening and go upstairs to my office.  I have been doing project life, scrapbook layouts and One Little Word during my creative times. I have been trying new techniques, new color combinations and figuring out what I like and don't like. I've been stretching myself....and more excitingly I have been having fun doing it!

The challenge that I set myself for this layout included the color orange and the use of a sewing machine. So I dug out my patterned papers and found this aqua sheet with white script and a second piece with orange circles, aqua centers and grey stars.  They looked great together.  I then went through some photos, found a recent one of myself and printed it in black and white.

So far this year I have been doing a lot of work on myself. A lot of personal development, a lot of soul searching and a lot of trying new things.  With all of these changes and experiences that I have been having I wanted to capture the women that I am right now.  A window into who I am at that moment in time. The journey into discovering more about myself. The challenge of pushing and stretching myself further than I think possible.

So I put together a "I AM" layout capturing a few of the words, descriptions and sentences that make up who I am right now. I love how this gives some insight into what is going on in my life, how I am feeling and the perspective that I have.

I have recently made some changes to the types of foods that I am putting in my body and I am pleased to share that so far it is going well.  The one meal that I have been struggling with a little more than the others is breakfast, so I set aside some time this weekend to do some research and reading and see what I could find.

When you start looking there is so much information out there, and for a newbie like me it is both exciting and overwhelming.  Eggs are the easiest and probably the most obvious choice but I can only eat so many eggs for breakfast before I go egg-crazy.  You can imagine how happy I was when I came across this little gem - gluten free, dairy free and no egg in sight - Low Carb Granola.

Low Carb Granola, serves two to three.

    1/4 cup gluten free oats
1/4 cup and a bit extra sunflower seeds
    1/2 cup crushed almonds
    1/2 cup crushed walnuts
As much cinnamon as you like
    1 tablespoon melted coconut oil
    A dash of vanilla essence
A bit of Splenda or honey

Preheat the oven to 100 degrees Celsius. Combine the oats, seeds, almonds and walnuts. Add the cinnamon, vanilla essence and splenda and finally coat the mixture in the melted coconut oil.  Spread the mixture onto a pan and heat in the oven for thirty minutes, checking it after fifteen.

The first thing you will notice when you open the oven is just how good it smells....and the taste doesn't disappoint either. It is great warm, straight out the oven and just as good once its cooled.  I ate mine with two turkey patties but you could also have it with yogurt or ricotta cheese.

Let me know if you make it and what you think. Enjoy!

Eeep, its almost the middle of the month and I am only now sharing with you how I did on my March goals and what April goals I have set. Thankfully my April goals were in place on the first of the month and are well underway to be achieved.

Lets jump right in here then - these are the goals for March and how I did:
    1. Graduate with Honors and enjoy the day to the max! | Achieved
    2. Continue and stick with my One Thing Challenge | In progress
    3. Hard landscape the back garden | Achieved
    4. Document one story for my March project life album using the Story Kit | Failed - kit lost in post
    5. Apply to volunteer positions | Failed
    6. Finish reading one book | Achieved
    7. Cook 1 new recipe | Achieved

So all in all, not too bad. Some of the goals ended up being out of my control like my missing kit and others I just didn't get around to them.

These are the April goals that I set and have been working on so far this month:
    1. Enjoy a mother/daughter weekend.
    2. Finish decorating and preparing the back garden.
    3. Read one book and start a second.
    4. Wake up by 6:30 each morning.
