  • This is the fifth year and sixth course that I have done towards my Bsc Honours Psychology degree and I can honestly say that this cognitive psychology course has kicked my butt this year.

It has been the most challenging, frustrating, interesting and hard going course I have done so far.  Not only the course work but also the six week project.

After nine months of hard work, the results came out from both the exam and the overall module result and I am so proud to share that not only did I pass, but I did so with 77% which earned me a level 2 pass; the highest that I could get based on my assignment scores.

Thanks mom for the congratulatory flowers, they made my evening!

With my exams finally being over for this year, I wanted to take the time to think about how I want to spend the next twelve weeks.  I want to make the most of this time. I want to have fun. I want to try new things.

So after spending a little time looking at my options and considering how busy my work schedule is going to be, I have come up with the following things that I want to have accomplished by the end of the year.

    The Fun Stuff List

Free Bullet Graphics  Finish unpacking my house.
Free Bullet Graphics  Go all out for Christmas - decorations, food, gifts - the works.
Free Bullet Graphics  Lose a total of 15lbs.
Free Bullet Graphics  Read three books.
Free Bullet Graphics  Do the bible study of James.
Free Bullet Graphics  Take part in the Pink Party Zumbathon 2013.
Free Bullet Graphics  Have a facial.
Free Bullet Graphics  Spend time with some friends.
Free Bullet Graphics  Make time for regular exercise.
Free Bullet Graphics  Take part in and have lots of fun doing Brene Brown's six week e-course.

What plans do you have for the rest of the year?

I cant believe that it has been just over a month since I last posted on my blog.  Things have been so busy and to be honest, a big factor in the non blogging has been due to me trying to figure out a work/life balance with my new job.  I would love to say that I have it figured out, but I'm still learning and tweaking as things go on.

About six weeks ago, I posted my summer mash-up goals and I thought a good place to start with my "come back" post would be to update how my summer goals are going.

    Race for Life 2013

For the past four years, mom and I have taken part in Race for Life. Its sort of become a tradition for us and at the same time it is a definite sign of summer.  This year we did the early race - June 30th.  It was a gorgeous day and was so much fun!

Take a day trip to the beach

I love the beach - it makes me so very happy.  Were I know live, the closest ocean is about an hour and a half away while some of the nicer beaches are between two and a half and four hours away.  I think that sometimes I get so busy with life, that I forget to do things which are fun.  A few hours in the car and I could be running my toes through gorgeous sand, feeling the spray from the water on my face. So this summer, I wanted to make sure that I do fun things on purpose - hello my day trip to the beach.

    Complete and enjoy residential school

Last week I had residential school. I must be honest, I was not looking forward to this one little bit but as its a requirement for my degree I had to go.  I am glad to report that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. We had a fabulous tutor and I was part of a great team.

    Enjoy the rest of summer!

Wow, I can't believe that it is May already!  This year is just flying by. April has been a really busy month, with lots of learning going on.  We've had a few more warmer days than previous months but it still doesn't quite feel like spring yet. So, lets have a look at how April went and what things will be going on in May.

These are the five priorities I set for this year:
    1. Take care of myself emotionally & physically - including focusing on living my personal boundaries
    2. Focus my energy on doing well at Uni and at work
    3. Nourish and grow my relationships with friends & family
    4. Be open to opportunity and possibility
    5. Have more fun, try new things and be happy in who I am

    REVIEW : : April intentions.
    • Submit TMA02 and make a start on TMA03 - TMA02 was completed early but I have not yet had my mark back on that and I am glad to share that I have started on TMA03 as well.
    • Create a love list - This is the second month that I haven't managed to complete this intention.  Ill just move it in May's intentions.
    • Maintain focus on my health journey - This month has been a really good month health wise. I have lost 6lbs and feel very focused on how things are going.
    • Love Myself - Last month one of my intentions was to find one thing that I can do to provide love and support to myself. The thing that I did, which sounds very simple, is that I cut myself some slack.  The first three weeks on the new job has been a steep learning curve but I have reminded myself over and over that I am still learning and that I don't have to know everything or be able to do everything right away.
    • Maintain relationships - This month I want to write to granny and speak to Rayola. I need to work on the relationships in my life - Both of these were done.
    • Make a good start in my new job - I have a lot hanging on this job and I don't want to mess it up, so I am hoping that everything goes well - The job is going well so far, I'm learning a lot and really think that this was the right move to make.
    SET : : May intentions.
    • Submit TMA03 - My third assignment is due by the 14th of this month and while I've made a start on it I want to make sure I meet the deadline.
    • Find balance in my work/personal life - The one thing that I have found difficult last month was getting that balance that I desperately need.  My intention this month is to begin to figure out how to get that balance that is right for me.
    • Create a love list - I have seen so many great Love Lists around on the Internet these past few weeks that I want to create one of my own.
    • Maintain focus on my health journey - My health is very important to me and I am making great progress.  This month I hope to achieve my 10 lb loss as well as my 1 stone award.
    • Go on a day trip - I have a week off work at the end of the month and during that week I hope to go down to the beach weather permitting.
    CELEBRATE : : I'm looking forward to.....
    • A pay rise - I have some big plans financially so I could really do with a pay rise. I know I am getting one with my new job, I'm just not sure how much yet.
    • Time to relax - I am looking forward to a few days off work over the next month and I can't wait.

You can only become truly accomplished at something you love.
    Don't make money your goal.
Instead, pursue the things you love doing,
and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off of you.

Wow, February is here already. How was your January?

Before I have a look back at my January intentions and then set my February ones, I wanted to take a moment to quickly recap my overall 2013 priorities and goals.

    2013 goals & priorities

These are the five priorities I set for this year:
    1. Take care of myself emotionally & physically - including focusing on living my personal boundaries

    REVIEW : : January intentions.
    • Spend time in God's word each day - I didn't do this every day, but I have done it more than I did previously and that my friends is progress.
    • Blog twice a week - Completed.
    • Create a study planner and include some rest time - Study planner has been updated and I have found that what works best for me is a study planner done only a week at a time. That way I ensure that I am up to date and if things do fall behind, then I won't feel the added pressure of having do redo my planner.  I didn't do that well on the rest front though - I will need to build that into my routine a little bit better.
    • Maintain focus on my health journey - 8 lbs lost in January!  A job well done indeed.
    • Find a new job - My intention stated that I knew I wouldn't be working at my new job by the end of the month but that my intention was to at least have started applying for new roles and I am pleased to say that I have.
    SET : : February intentions.
    • Spend time with friends - Spending time with friends is one of the ways in which I am hoping to help reduce my current stress levels.
    • Write a letter to Granny - Maintaining relationships is not easy, especially when the other person is halfway across the world.  But, this relationship is so important to me and so I will do my best to keep it meaningful.
    • Submit TMA01 and continue to stick to my weekly planned study sessions - Getting good grades for my first assignment is very important so a lot of focus is going onto it.  While I am doing that I also plan to stick to my sessions so I don't fall behind.
    • Maintain focus on my health journey - I plan to ensure that no matter what happens this month that I will be going to each and every weigh in. I also want to remember the importance of celebrating success along the way.
    • Find a new job - If it turns out that the jobs I have applied for don't come through, then I intend to keep trying. If it turns out that I am successful, then I will do my very best to get it.
    CELEBRATE : : I'm looking forward to...
    • Time spent with friends - I have a few visits with friends booked I am so looking forward to these days.

I'm late. Most of these sort of posts are done in the first few days of January however I wanted to spend a little more time looking at what my plans are for 2013 and how I want to achieve them.  I don't want these plans to swept under the carpet in a few months time because they didn't fit into what I actually want to achieve for this year, or because my expectations on myself were too high.  I want them to be specific, realistic, and broken down into a month by month plan to keep them achievable.

The first week of 2013 I decided that I was going to spend some time fasting and praying about the year ahead. I spent a lot of time thinking and praying about my life and I realised that this year I wanted to shift my focus to being different in my daily life.  I want to make small changes each month that will impact that daily life.  These changes will cover my priorities and will help me to focus my energy on the right things for me. I am so excited about what 2013 will bring.

    2013 goals & priorities

These are the five priorities I set for this year:
    1. Take care of myself emotionally & physically - including focusing on living my personal boundaries
    2. Focus my energy on doing well at Uni and at work
    3. Nourish and my relationships with friends & family
    4. Be open to opportunity and possibility
    5. Have more fun, try new things and be happy in who I am

The way that I'm putting these into practise in January are...
    January Intentions
    • Spend time in God's word each day - For me, this is very important to me. I know that it would be more ideal for me to do this first thing in the morning but I know that if I set up my intention as such it would not be long before the snooze button wins out.
    • Blog twice a week - I think that starting with twice a week is a good place to start.
    • Create a study planner and include some rest time - I have realised that being organised is key to doing well at Uni. I also understand the importance of blocking out free time in which I can rest and have some fun.
    • Maintain focus on my health journey - I plan to ensure that no matter what happens this month that I will be going to each and every weigh in. I also want to remember the importance of celebrating success along the way.
    • Find a new job - This is a big deal for me at the moment. While I know I probably wont be working in that new job by the end of January, I do intend to be already applying for new roles.

Do you make resolutions or goals at this time of year?

4 Simple Goals (by A Beautiful Mess)

While catching up on some blogs, I cam across Elsies 4 simple goals - so I thought I would join in the challenge.  The next four months are going to be busy ones and I already have things that are going to take place, but I thought it would be good to pick 4 goals to focus on between now and the end of the year.  Here are the "rules" -

    1. Choose simple goals that will make your life richer and happier on a daily basis. Choose things you may not otherwise get done, but that are not difficult to accomplish.

    2. Do not choose result oriented goals, choose activity oriented goals. for example.... instead of "lose 10 pounds", choose something like "eat fresh fruits and vegetables every day". Get what I'm saying? Positive actions instead of just the end result!

    3. Choose goals that are personal that you believe will truly make your life richer just by doing them! They can be daily, weekly or one time experiences.

    4. Choose a reward for each goal as it is accomplished! It can be a small or large reward- it's up to you.

    5. Blog about your goals, each one as you achieve it and a big post when they are all finished before the new year! I'll be doing this too! Link back to this post if you want to and leave us links to your goal blogs in the comments of this (or any) post for a chance to be featured on ABM before the new year. We will be sharing some of our favourite reader goals with links to your blogs! *NOTE: Please feel free to use the image above on your own blogs if you like!

    Here are my goals:

    1. Do something creative every week - Art makes my soul happy. It helps me find balance when my life seems too crazy.  By carving out some time each week - I'm hoping to bring a little extra happiness and enjoyment into my life. It doesn't matter what I do, it just needs to bring me joy.

    2. Do some sort of exercise activity twice a week - I need to get moving. This body of mine was created to move and be used. So, it doesn't matter what activity it is I just need to move with intention twice a week.

    3. Complete the 30 day Joy Equation plan - I bought the Joy Equation about a year ago now and while I started it I didn't see it through. With all the changes that I have going on in my life and mind at the moment I want to take the time to work through this plan. So I am committing to do it - to see it through.

    4. Keep a gratitude journal capturing all the blessings in my life - I am really trying to focus on the blessings in my life, even on the days where there feels like there are none.  This little book will take only a few minutes each evening to record my blessing, but I have a feeling it will be a beautiful treasure by the time it is full.

Why don't you join us in the challenge - it will be fun!

I can't believe that we have already reached the half way mark for this year. Time sure is moving on quickly.  I am one of those people who likes setting goals, who enjoys making lists, ticking them off once completed and who tends to try to tackle too many goals/projects/ideas at once.  Reaching the end of the six month mark, I decided it was time to have a look at the goals I set in January. Which ones did I reach?  Which ones do I need to carry over and which ones are no longer right for me?

So I sat down and spent some time reflecting and brainstorming. I always love having projects on the go - probably too many at one time if I am being completely honest. And as expected, once I had completed my brainstorming, I had so many awesome, exciting goals that I would love to complete by December, however it quickly became clear that this may not be the best option.

I looked at my list and I asked myself one question - "Achieving which one of these goals will make the biggest difference to my life?" I realised that perhaps picking one main goal and two or three smaller goals would be more productive for me.

While doing some research on goal setting, I came across this great visual guide on pintrest and thought it would be great to share.  Take a quick read through it and see if it gives you any ideas. None of what it suggests is ground breaking, but maybe your missing a step and that is the one thing you need to help you achieve your goals.

Here are the steps that I followed:
    1. Brainstorming - Check
    2. Choose 3 goals - Check
    3. No Limits - The two smaller goals are by no means limit free however my bigger goal feels like a dream more than a goal.
    4. Write out your goals - That's what my journal and blog are for of course!
    5. Break your goals down - I have always been pretty good at creating mini goals, but I recently read an article on Oprah's site which suggested that you not only create mini goals, but also daily goals. Daily goals which are so easy to achieve that there is little chance of not achieving them. I guess the idea is that the more times you achieve these goals, be them simple or not, the more your confidence and positive thinking grows.  I think its a great idea.
    6. Announce your goals - My three goals for the next six months include paying off my car loan (hopefully done by the
end of October), complete my Biological Psychology course with a Level 2 pass, and my big goal is to really focus on living a healthy life and by doing that I am aiming to lose a minimum of 30lbs.
    7. Keep your goals on your mind - Assignment due dates, payments coming out my bank and weekly weigh-ins should keep my goals at the forefront of my mind.
    8. Work towards your goals - Obvious but necessary.
    9. Keep a success log - Check.
    10. Reach and repeat - Working on.

The last thought that I want to leave you with is this.......

I have been single for a long time now, about four and a half years to be more precise.  I know that I needed to take time to heal, to sort things, to figure it all out but lets be honest. When I ended things with my ex, I hadn't expected to still be sitting here single, four and a half years later. But, that's a post for another time.

One of the things that I have noticed during my time of living on my own, is that my life is pretty routine. Nothing much changes unless I make a conscious effort to change it.  I know where everything is, I know what I will be doing tomorrow and the next day and the day after that. I only watch things that I want to watch and I only go to places that I love.  It's not a bad life by any means, but it does mean that I have found that if I am not more aware, my life moves past me without me even noticing.  The routine of my everyday life overshadows the time that passes, the time in which nothing much changes, and sadly that I don't see much growth in my life.  Its easy to come home from work, cook dinner and sit on the Internet while watching TV and before I know, the evening has gone and its time to head to bed. If I don't pay close enough attention, weeks can go by like that.

I read an article somewhere about this very issue. About how living alone can give you the freedom to do whatever you want...and yet so many people choose to use that freedom to simply sit in front of the TV.  Well, I don't want to waste my freedom anymore. I want to pay attention to what is going on around me and I want to use this time constructively, to grow as a person, to create a life that I can call me own and be proud of.

I want to set some intentions for the week ahead. Intentions that will get me closer to my dreams, even if it is just a baby step closer.  I want to make the most of this alone time that I have and I plan on doing that this week by doing the following:
    * Read all the material that I need to cover for TMA03 by the end of the week
    * Turn off the TV two evenings this week
    * Curl up in bed early one evening and spend the time reading
    * Complete Soul Detox
    * Blog
    * Make an arrangement to go for coffee with Anna
    * Cook wholesome meals and plan my food for the day ahead
    * Spend time breaking down the "how" that will help me reach my dreams
    * Create

How do you make sure that you are living your life with intention?

Right now, I have two main focuses in my personal life.  The first is that I am doing a lot of work and putting a lot my energy on learning to love myself more. I have been working on some projects and will be sharing these over the next few weeks but I am very excited about the road that this will take me on.  The second focus in my life is practising the art of Intention. I want to live my life with intention, not just let it pass me by. So, one of the activities that I am doing to help me remember to live my life with intention right now is to create a Summer Twenty Twelve Intention list, thanks Ali for the inspiration.

The items on my list include:
♥ Go for a walk every day the sun is out
♥ Arrange a beach weekend away
♥Treat myself to an Indian Head Massage
    ♥ Complete TMA03
    ♥ Create something new
    ♥ Buy a beauty box
    ♥ Spend time with Anna
    ♥ Read a new book
    ♥ Have a picnic
    ♥ Reach 10% weight loss
    ♥ Wear a dress
    ♥ Feed the ducks

The big one for me this month is going to be the setting of boundaries at work.

Work is the one place that I seem to really battle with maintaining balance - especially these past few days. I say yes to things that I shouldn't do because I don't want to disappoint and because I feel like I have to and I have things piled on me without standing up for myself and explaining just how much I already have on my plate.  These past few days have been particularly bad and I came away from work on Friday exhausted and with a very sore throat.  I had also spent most of the day holding back the tears, trying my hardest to keep it all together.  So I came home and did some thinking. I knew that I couldn't keep going like I was so I have created some boundaries that I am going to implement during June.

I know that this will definitely be one of those things that change as time goes on and I am OK with that - I just wanted to get something together to start off with. Like a skeleton draft I guess.  So here is what I have come up with so far:

    1. Each day I will not only have my lunch break but I will take it away from my desk to ensure that I don't get interrupted.
    2. I will not agree to pick up anyone else's work
    3. I will speak up when I am being asked to take on more

I know its only three things, but it's a start right?

I tried Quinoa for the first time last weekend at my mom's, it was weird but not too bad. I love trying new things and I knew that it was healthy for me, so while my first taste of it didn't go down as a complete love I knew I had to give it another go.  And then I cam across the recipe below and after trying it, i knew I could make Quinoa a regular part of my menu rotation.

This salad is soooo easy to make and is ideal for both lunch at work or a quick dinner. Plus it makes about four decent size servings so you could have a few meals out of it - perfect for a single gal.  Enjoy!

    BBQ Chicken Quinoa Salad

    Ingredients
    • 2 cups cooked quinoa
    • 1 cup corn
    • 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
    • 1 cup shredded BBQ chicken
    • BBQ sauce
    • 1 green pepper, chopped
    • cilantro for garnish
    • avocado for garnish
    Instructions
    1. Pre-cook quinoa (the night before, or the day of!).
    2. The recipe calls for pre-cooked chicken. Add chicken thighs, BBQ sauce and water to crock pot and let cook fully.
    3. In a large bowl, toss together the quinoa, corn, black beans, chicken and avocado. Season with salt and pepper.
    4. Transfer mixture onto a bowl and top with BBQ sauce, avocado and cilantro.
    5. Serve warm or at room temperature.

This week I am going on holiday on my own.  It is the first holiday I have taken on my own and I am really excited about it.  I got a great deal in a holiday park which is only a few miles from the ocean. Five days, just me, the ocean and God.

I have big plans for this week and I can't wait to be able to share those things that come out of this time that I have set aside.  I want to make this "setting aside time" a regular thing in my life, perhaps once every quarter or maybe just twice a year - I'm not entirely sure on the exact details just yet.  I want to take the time to reflect on where I am in life, my current position verses where my goals would put me. I want to evaluate where I am going. I want to spend some time praying, refreshing my spirit and hopefully renewing my mind.

I hope to be able to come back having reviewed how things have gone in quarter one of 2012, a new set of goals for quarter two and a mission statement for my life right now. Along with a refreshed perspective and fingers crossed a bit of a sun tan.

Set aside 10 minutes, make yourself a cup of tea and watch the video below. Let it speak to you the way it has spoken to me.  Enjoy your week ahead, I know I will.

I love lists and i love goals and I seem to be very good at switching and changing them.  I have a 101 Goals list on my blog but I wanted something that was a little more tangible and that had a shorter time scale.  So, after seeing a few posts about a list of shorter term goals to complete before your next birthday, i decided to do my own and to add it to my Scrapbooking Life Journal.

I left home at the age of 18.  To be more precise, i left the country rather than just my home.  I left behind my friends, family and familiarity all in the name of adventure.  While going on this adventure was amazing for me, leaving all of that behind was not as easy as i thought it would have been.

And then you have technology........and thank goodness for all these advances.  The Internet, email, Skype - all these helped to make my transition abroad 100% easier, except when it came to keeping in touch with my gran.

Like most Gran's - they are not "up and with it" when it comes to these things.  We have shown her a few times how to start the computer and get onto the Internet. We have even written a step by step guide for all of this - but she still isn't confident on it and ends up not bothering.  Her computer is now a lovely place to put her flower vases...lol.

Anyway, because of this I have made sure to always keep in touch with her via snail mail.  I try to write once a month, and while things get busy at times and one month turns into two, there is nothing as special as receiving a beautiful envelope with a hand written letter inside.

This week i took some time out to write my gran a letter, and i realised that this writing thing that we do - that we have done for years - is such a special thing between us. Something that we share, that keeps us updated with things going on in our lives, that reminds us of our love for each other and most importantly its OUR special connection.
