  • I have been struggling with my weight for a very long time now. I keep trying to make changes and then things happen and I go right back to my bad eating habits   So when I made yet another start on this weight loss journey four weeks ago, I decided to keep it to myself until I felt like I had found my groove.....and found my groove I have.

Here i am, four weeks later, and I have lost 7.5 lbs so far.  My eating has been good and I haven't had one binge episode during that four week period.  So far I am feeling focused and in the zone but I also know that it could take just one thing to make me feel out of control.... and that knowledge is keeping me plugged into my relationship with God.  I know that when that time comes, the only thing that will get me through will be to go to Him instead of going to the food.

To keep me on track and focused, I wanted to state my intentions as follows:

My goal? My goal is to change my life, to become healthy in the fullest sense of the word.  I want to change from some one who doesn't value herself as she should to someone who practises self love every single day.

And how am I planning on doing this? By undertaking a mixture of the following:

    • Joining Slimming world online - This is the only program that I have found that fits with me and my lifestyle. I have a very sweet tooth, but I have found that Slimming world allows me to have a treat but not to overindulge.  It will help me make good choices and keep my treats in check.
    • Getting some form of exercise at least three times a week - At the moment, I do very little exercise....like maybe once a week. It's not good enough and I know it. My body was made to move and while I know that I should do it, I have realised that I am going to exercise because I can. I want to be grateful for my body that is capable of movement.
    • Being accountable - Being accountable is important and I plan to use that accountability to head me towards my goals.  So once a month I will be checking in here, posting my thoughts on how the month went as well as my progress photos.
So here's the plan, and we will see what happens next.

If you know me in real life or have been following my blog for a few years you will know that I am always trying to lose weight, that I am always on some sort of diet, and yet I just don't seem to be making any real progress in this area.  In January I joined Slimming World and have been following the program ever since, having lost eight pounds so far.  I wish that I could say that it has all been going smoothly but these past few weeks have not been too great.  I find that when life gets stressful around me I turn towards food instead of continuing to focus on what is really important to me.  The weight loss slows down and my motivation begins with dwindle.
This past week I have been thinking and spending time researching motivation.  I read numerous articles and posts about motivation, about how to keep it and about how easy it is to lose it.  The one thing that stood out to me in all the articles though was how this motivation thing seems to be more of a skill than anything else. Like other skills it needs to be practised and focused on. Motivation is your brain’s way of manipulating your body — and you should never lose sight of the fact that YOU hold the marionette strings!
These are the tactics that I found and that I am going to try to use to stay motivated.

    1. Have a Vision In Mind

You have to know where you are going so that you will know when you have gotten there. Motivation is an abstract idea, so give yourself something tangible to work towards. What is it that you want to accomplish? What does your ideal look like at this moment? What do you want it to look like a year from now? 5 years from now?
Give yourself a minute to really think about those questions, and when you are done – say it out loud. Say it to the significant people in your life, to anyone who will listen. Make your vision public. My friend always says “If you can see it, you can be it.”
Also: Give yourself permission to change your mind. Your vision doesn’t need to be permanent, and if it is not working for you — MAKE A NEW ONE. I think this is where a lot of people get caught up and therefore de-motivated. If you’re not excited to do what you are doing, maybe you need to be doing something new. Now go figure out what that something is instead of wasting precious time!

    2. Stay Focused on You

I think the first thing to recognise is that you can’t do everything.I want you to REALLY think about that. Everyone says they recognise this, yet they continue to try to do it all. You will never get anywhere (nor will you feel motivated to get anywhere) if you are constantly comparing you at your worst to to others at their best. Are you guilty of this? I know that I am. The thing is, if you have a vision but allow yourself to be distracted by what everyone else is doing, you are giving away your energy and your focus.

    3. Cultivate Seeds of Inspiration

Read books related to your vision
    Seek out a mentor
Watch an movie where triumph is a theme
    Make a new Pinterest Board
    Listen to good music
Call your mom (or someone else who sees you through rose coloured glasses!)
    Talk to new people
    Take a chance
Whatever it takes — but you must, YOU MUST, get in touch with that feeling inside of you. We all have it, but it takes work to allow yourself to be a conduit for inspiration. Do the work. And if you are not feeling inspired, seek out a different route.

    4. Recognise When It’s Time for steaming ahead or taking time out

Motivation is just as much about being as it is about doing, but I think sometimes we forget that. Sure everything looks glossy when you are in the midst of kicking ass and checking things off lists but if you don’t shut down and recharge the batteries every once in a while your inspiration will leave. Nobody feels motivated when they are exhausted. In one of the books that I have been reading, the author stated that people give up on their goals for one of three reasons; exhaustion, disappointment or feeling overwhelmed. Allowing yourself to get to that point is setting yourself up for failure. This is the piece of motivation that I struggle with the most, but it is definitely worth keeping in the back of your mind. It’s easy to forget that giving yourself downtime ensures that when you give yourself the best opportunity to succeed.

    5. Make A List

To-do lists are the best. Keep LOTS of lists. Lists for everything from tasks to ideas to quotes to random thoughts. I have a list for everything. Lists help my mind from being overwhelmed.  But here’s the thing: They aren’t always organised, they aren’t alphabetical or filed by order of importance. But they are written down on paper. Most importantly they are expelled from my brain, freeing up valuable space in my mind. I can feel comforted by the fact that if I flip to a piece of paper my ideas will be there. It’s like a running tally of motivational fuel just waiting to be used.

    6. Set Deadlines and Provide Rewards

Generally if something sits on a To-Do list I’ve made and I don’t get around to it, I use that as an indicator that it’s time to re-think my vision. But ultimately there are those times when we need to get motivated to things to that CAN’T be excised from the list. What motivates me on that stuff?
If something sits on my to do list and I don't get around to it, it's a good idea to use it as an indicator that it's time to re-think my vision.  The thing is though, sometimes those things that haven't been done, still need doing. Those are the items that need motivation in order to be done.  What have a learnt about motivation and tasks that you don't feel like doing? To get those things done, its best to face them with a deadline and a reward!

This time next week i will be finishing work at 2:30 instead of 5pm, i will be making my way to mom and dad's with a car full of beautifully wrapped gifts, my camera in hand and of course the tom tom to make sure i arrive before Christmas is over with!

Christmas is a difficult time of year to be on a diet.  Not only is the all the yummy food that makes it way into the office each day, but its the parties and meals out and even something as simple as the cold.  This week has been tough temptation wise.  Delicious, gorgeous smelling food. But i have been good and managed to avoid any badness.

So to say that i was dissapointed when i climbed on the scales this morning is an understatement. A lose is a lose i know, but for how much effort i have had to put in this week i just feel like i should have lost more.

    Now, onto the results.
This week i have lost 1.2lbs
In total, i have now lost 28.2lbs

One more week and i have made it to the eight week mark. That means that its another photo reveal. Well done me!

I cant believe that this is the six week weigh-in. That means that i am halfway through the first session. Looking back over these past six weeks i am so amazed at how i have done. I am so proud of myself for sticking with it, for giving it my full 100%, of pushing through when things got rough.  Just that on its own is an amazing feeling.

To top it off - this week i have two comments from two different people about my weight loss. Neither of them knew that i was on this diet. Now that really just makes you wanna smile.

    Now to the numbers:

Week six i have lost 3lbs.
In total i have lost 27.5lbs! Wohoo me!!

On a side note - i am trying to decide if i should wear my leggings and denim skirt to work tomorrow or if i should give it a miss and wear it another week.....hmmmmm, we will have to see!

This week has been a good week as far as food goes. Monday i thought that i was coming down with a cold, but i have managed to hold it off while fighting tooth ache.  Heres hoping that next week will be a healthier one for me.

This week i have lost a total of 6 pounds.  That means that all in all i have the following results:
    Week 5   24.2 lbs lost

1 Month ago today i took my first step towards my weight loss goal.  I didn't know what to expect and i wasn't sure if i would even be able to stick to it.  But here i am, 1 month on and i am so proud of myself. I don't even know what the final number is for this 1 month landmark, but i do know that my clothes are loser, i feel better about myself, my face has changed, i no longer have cravings, i have not cheated at all....not even once and best of all my ear problems that i have had for months seems to have cleared up.

    Things that i have noticed
    • My purple work shirt used to be tight around the middle - now its loose
    • I can notice the change in my face and colar bones
    • My jeans that were fitting now have to be worn with a belt and the jeans that were so tight they were digging into me now fit well
    • My cravings for chocolate seem to have gone

I thank God for his help on this journey - without him, i don't think i could have done it.  Here is praying that the month ahead will be as rewarding and as good as the month i have just finished!

    Now onto the scales.........

    Week Four 18.2lbs lost

And my 1 month progress photo.......

    Not Bad!!

P.S So i wrote this entry over the weekend as my weeks are just too busy to have much time to blog. On Wednesday i cheated and am currently trying to pick up the pieces and reverse the damage. It was only one afternoon but it has made me so much more determined not to cheat again and not to give up.

Its the end of week 3 and i am heading towards the 1 month mark.  I am so pleased with the results and am excited to not only weigh in next week but to also measure and see how many cm's i have lost.  This week has been a much easier week then what week 2 was, and i came on just yesterday so i am hoping a few extra pounds will come off on the run up to week 4.
    Week Three 17.5 lbs lost

Wow, i cant believe i have been doing this for two weeks already.  It has been both exciting and depriving at the same time.

This week has had temptation around every corner.  Buffet at work, leaving due at work, Julies birthday cake and hot food for Diwali.  And each time i said no thank you. I am very proud to say that i have not cheated once. I have thought about it a lot but haven't strayed from the diet. Lets hope that  the scales reflect my hard work!

Any day now i should start my time of the month - it will be very interesting to see the effect of this on the numbers.
    Week Two 14 lbs lost

It's time....time to do something. Time to make a decision and stick to it. Time to take that step and in dong so take back my life.

I have now been on the diet for a week and what a week it has been.  I was so excited to get started on this journey that the moment it arrived in my inbox, i printed it off, made a shopping list and went shopping as soon as i could.  Tuesday, 26th October 2010, was day one of this journey.  And boy was it a bad day for me. I think that the most difficult part was the lack of caffeine. I am sure that that is what caused the headache and the sore eyes and the general grotty feeling.

But from them on, it started getting better. The headaches fuzzed into a thick fog and for the past few days i haven't had any headaches or fogginess.  The eating side of things, or rather the lack of eating is definitely difficult ........... but no where near as bad as i thought it would be.  I think i am so motivated to do this that that is helping me with the hunger pangs.

This weeks challenge - Not having milk in my tea.  I am not sure if i will ever get used to that or start to like black tea....yuk!

    Week One 10lbs lost

This week was a good one for me. I managed to stick to my points, write everything down and do something nice for myself almost every day.

I have put together a goal sheet and i am marking it off as i go along. I am a very visual person so this is really working great for me.

    Weight gain: 0.5 pounds
    Total loss: 49 pounds

This week i gained half a pound. I am dissapointed with it and am resolving myself to having to drop my points from 25, which is my given point allawance, to 22 which is my fast track points. I just dont seem to be loseing any weight when i have my 25 points a day.

This week i did three hours at the gym which is good.
